At the invitation of BEAC, the sports club of Eötvös Loránd University, the Serbian university chess team, with international masters among them and one of the strongest sides in Europe in the sport, came to Hungary between 9 and 11 November 2012.

Four teams played: the Hungarian university team, the Hungarian youth team, the Serbian university team and ELTE-BEAC. The Hungarian university side included Imre Balog, the previous year’s national university champion, and Boglárka Erdős, the best in the women’s field of that championship. The Serbian team fielded three international masters: Nikola Nestorović, Miloš Lapčević and Sandra Đukić.

The programme was formally opened by György Vinczek, deputy mayor of Budapest’s 19th district. ELTE was represented by Dr Tibor Seifert; the Serbian delegation included Dušan Cogoljević, owner of the PEP private university, and Goran Kvrgić, its director. Zoltán Rakaczki represented the Hungarian University Sports Federation. The players were also welcomed by the meeting’s two chief organisers: György Ádám, head of the ELTE-BEAC chess section, and László Vadlövő, president of the Gárdoš association.

From the Hungarian side, Máté Bagi’s result stood out, since he beat a grandmaster, as did Boglárka Erdős’s hundred per cent. For Serbia, Ivan Serenac took every point available. The winner’s cup went to Serbia.

The games could be followed live online.
