Gedeon Barcza, chess grandmaster, eight times Hungarian champion and seven times an Olympian, was born a hundred years earlier. The anniversary was marked with an international tournament in his birthplace, Kisújszállás, and in Berekfürdő, with the intention of making it a tradition.

It was a round robin: four teams from abroad (Polish, Russian, Serbian and Slovak) and four Hungarian. ELTE-BEAC met the Serbian college selection for the fifth time; that team is essentially the side of the PEP private university in Belgrade.

The Serbs justified their billing and won, finishing first in the team event as well. The Hungarian students took second, ahead of the youth teams, though they edged the strongest of them, St Petersburg’s “Spassky” team, only on tiebreak.

ELTE-BEAC was represented by Zsuzsa Kabai, György Ádám Jr, Ádám Kormos and Csaba Nováky, all students of the ELTE Faculty of Science.

The tournament was also the occasion on which László Vadlövő conveyed the Serbian college’s invitation to the following year’s return match.
